Salt Of The Earth
About Salt of the Earth
Welcome to Salt of the Earth, a nonprofit organization based in Salt Lake City, Utah, dedicated to revitalizing our community and empowering those who call this city home. Our journey began with the vision to address the affordable housing crisis and uplift individuals through financial literacy, gig employment, and opportunities for upward mobility. We believe that a strong community is built on the foundation of secure housing, financial knowledge, and the chance for every person to reach their full potential.
The 5th Ward Building Restoration
Our first project is close to our hearts: the restoration of the historic Salt Lake City 5th Ward building at 740 South 300 West. Built in 1910, this iconic structure has served as a cornerstone of our community for over a century. On Easter Sunday, the building was severely damaged, and it now requires extensive repairs.
The 5th Ward building is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a symbol of our community's history and resilience. We are committed to restoring this beautiful building to its former glory, transforming it into a space that the entire community can be proud of.
To achieve this, we need your help. The estimated cost of repairs exceeds $500,000, and we are actively securing funds to make this vision a reality. Your generous donations will directly support the restoration efforts and help preserve this historic landmark for future generations.
Our Mission

At Salt of the Earth, we believe that together, we can create a brighter future for Salt Lake City. By restoring the 5th Ward building, we not only preserve our shared heritage but also create a space where the community can gather, learn, and grow.

Our Stories
Justin
My name is Justin, and I'm 36 years old. I have twin boys who are 6 and a little girl who is 4. For the past 13 years, I've struggled with addiction. About two years ago, I met the founder of Salt of the Earth, and I honestly don’t know where I’d be without their help. Their ability to provide stable housing for my family has been crucial, giving us a roof over our heads while I continue to fight this battle.
I'm proud to say that I’ve been sober for six months now, and the founder’s unwavering faith in me has been a huge part of this journey. Their support has made all the difference, and I am deeply grateful for everything they’ve done for us.

I remember the early days of my divorce, struggling with addiction after my wife left and took our three children. That was the darkest period of my life, and I felt completely hopeless. Things got even worse when I lost my right to practice as a nurse and had no training to find another job. I couldn’t get an apartment because I didn’t have enough money upfront, and that’s when I found the founder of Salt of the Earth on Airbnb.
They took me in, and when I began having trouble paying rent, they offered me a job working on their properties, doing cleaning and maintenance. Things were okay for a while, but eventually, my relapses started happening more frequently. Throughout it all, the founder remained my friend, offering me both a job and a safe place to stay.
Looking back, I can’t imagine how much worse things could have gotten without that stability. I saw people in similar situations fall even deeper without any support. The founder of Salt of the Earth sacrificed a lot, including personally driving me four hours to rehab. It was through that rehab, and their unwavering support, that I finally turned a corner and found life again.
I’ve been clean for a few years now, with only a couple of relapses, and I’ve remarried my wife. Our family is happy once more. In today’s world, coming back from a heavy addiction like mine is rare, and I consider myself part of a miracle. Without the support of people like the founder of Salt of the Earth, I wouldn’t have made it. Many don’t. I feel truly blessed and grateful.

The founder of Salt of the Earth was instrumental in transforming my life after a decade of addiction, helping me move toward a future filled with hope and stability. For ten years, I struggled with substance abuse, relapsing over and over due to the lack of support and a stable environment. My addiction led to homelessness and deep isolation, leaving me without a reliable system to help break the cycle.
Salt of the Earth stepped in at a critical time. They provided more than just housing—they offered a safe, stable environment that was essential for my recovery. Their support went beyond immediate needs, giving me consistent guidance, emotional backing, and access to crucial resources. This comprehensive support system was vital in helping me overcome my addiction.
With their mentorship, I gained the tools and confidence to stay clean. Their unwavering dedication and compassionate approach helped me break free from the destructive patterns of my past. With their help, I achieved what I once thought was unattainable—maintaining sobriety and rebuilding my life.
Thanks to this unwavering support, I’ve now been sober for two years. This recovery has led to a new chapter in my life where I’m not only thriving but also preparing for significant milestones. I’m happily married and on the brink of becoming a father—an experience I wasn’t ready for during my years of addiction. The influence of Salt of the Earth made this new beginning possible, and I’m deeply grateful for the role they played in helping me achieve a stable, fulfilling life and a bright future.
